Finch, McCullum propel Lions to big win

Gujarat Lions 164 for 3 (Finch 50, McCullum 49, M Ashwin 2-31) beat Rising Pune Supergiants 163 for 5 (Du Plessis 69, Pietersen 37) by seven wickets

Aaron Finch starred for Gujarat Lions with a second consecutive half-century.

Another one-sided encounter, another win for the chasing team. This season's IPL, it seems, is on repeat mode, after Gujarat Lions cruised to a seven-wicket win against Rising Pune Supergiants in Rajkot. After a strong start, Supergiants looked set for a score in excess of 180, but a late collapse quickly turned the contest in Lions' favour. Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum then effectively killed the game after pillaging 62 in the Powerplay, during their chase of 164.
MS Dhoni had pulled back some momentum for Supergiants by contributing to a 20-run last over in the first innings, but his bowlers threw it all away. Loose deliveries stacked up, and the Lions openers duly dispatched them. Four fours and two sixes off the seamers meant Dhoni turned to M Ashwin in the last over of the Powerplay, but Finch took the legspinner for four fours in a 19-run over.
Finch then hit Rajat Bhatia for two sixes over long-on in the seventh over, but holed out to square leg for 50 - his second half-century of the season. By then, though, the damage had been done.
McCullum continued to latch on to wayward bowling, as the spinners failed to extract much from the patchy surface. Supergiants' day was summed up when Dhoni missed a routine stumping with McCullum well short of his crease after R Ashwin yorked the batsman.
After McCullum lobbed one to cover off Ishant Sharma, the captain Suresh Raina and Dwayne Bravo completed the formalities with cameos as Lions reached the target with two overs to spare.
Supergiants' batting was a tale of two halves. Faf du Plessis and Ajinkya Rahane continued from where they left off against Mumbai Indians, using exquisite timing to plunder five fours in the first 21 balls. After Pravin Tambe trapped Rahane lbw in the fourth over, Pietersen and du Plessis ensured a productive Powerplay with a host of boundaries.
The pair added 30 off 13 balls to end the Powerplay at 57 for 1, with du Plessis being particularly aggressive down the ground. Even as the fields spread, the boundary was found regularly and their stand stretched to 83.
But just when Supergiants looked to accelerate, Bravo brought out his slower balls to stall the charge. He bowled four of them in succession in the 14th over, the last of which forced Pietersen to drag on. Suddenly, one wicket brought three as the spinners found their lengths. Ravindra Jadeja, who has played most of his domestic cricket at this ground, varied his pace effectively to concede just four off the 17th and 19th overs to finish with figures of 2 for 18.
The situation may have been a lot worse had Dhoni not given Supergiants a late surge - he took Bravo for a six, two fours and three twos in the last over. In the end, Supergiants' 163 was nowhere near enough as they tasted their first defeat in the IPL.

Dhoni sounded testy in his post-match interview. He pretty much blamed every one, including his young leg spinner, middle order batsmen, his fast bowlers, all rounders (which would be primarily Mitch Marsh). He put down a question about what was spoken in the timeout after first 6 overs of bowling, and blamed having to play under a new franchise. The only one he didn't blame was himself. I am not sure if there is a larger context to his recent episodes of impatience when interacting with the press, but captain cool as turned a hothead. The Dhoni of old days would handle losses and difficult questions with monk like stoicism. He has overwhelming support of the fans, among the highest earnings in the game, his mistakes as a captain go unchallenged, and holds unparalleled power to Influence India's social and culture fabric? Not sure why he's so mad these days? Is he battling to accept the reality that that all of this will end one day?
Expect Marsh, Smith to be dropped next game.

First time back to cricket after the world cup and had an immediate feel for KP and Ashwin. KP running after the truck light in dark and must be regretting his messing up with english colors who are now well off without him. If he goes to SA then his workload will be enormous. He can consider a zimbabwe career instead. One moment in this game showed dhonis confidence in Ashwin. When he got hit for a six by BMac dhoni already expected ball to also go for six and when BMac missed the ball dhoni could not collect. Big time fall for Ash who thoroughly disappointed during the world cup when everyone expected a 200+ score by aussies when dooni brought ashwin early and he got hit big time.

As an Australian supporter, I'm glad Finch is doing well. But it begs the question, what on earth were our selectors thinking not playing him in several T20 world cup matches? At the start of the tournament, he was ranked the number 1 T20 batsmen IN THE WORLD!!!! Why would we leave him out ??? It's almost as if we didn't want our best team to be playing . Love the atmosphere of the IPL, always great entertainment!

Either Kp or Smith should play not both . Supergiants need some powerful hitters at the end to finish the inning . My playing X1 : Faf Rahane Smith MSD S.Tiwary Albie Perera I.Pathan R.Ashwin M.Ashwin I.Sharma . In my opinion, the above team looks far more balanced side . Albie Perera and Pathan can score quickly in dead overs . Besides that, they have six bowling option .

This has got to be the worst start to any t20 comp going round. There has not been one close game to date. For this loss I would put the blame on KP. He did not accelerate in the middle overs against the lesser bowlers and let Raina leave the death overs for the best bowlers.

Steve Smith should bat at no.4 or else drop him. He is not in the same league of Kohli in t20s. Its better to drop Mitchell Marsh for Albie Morkel. Albie Morkel is a better hitter than Marsh. He has won lots of matches for CSK with his bowling and batting. So Albie Morkel is the safest bet. Irfan Pathan should play in place of Rajat Bhatia. Rajat is not a genuine all rounder. The game in Mumbai was once in a blue moon game where he shone in his bowling. But I dont think Rajat can constantly perform with ball and bat. The utility of Irfan is that he can be used at the powerplay and at the end. He can also bat at no.6 or no.7. So i dont think he must be missed out. I am a huge Dhoni fan, but one aspect that I dont like about him is his stubbornness. He wont change his players until all the cool is lost. I hope he will realise this soon and take horses for courses.

Team has RP Singh and Rajat Bhatia as main bowlers, not to mention Ishant! How can they contain in 2nd innings? Impossible! They will lose all matches when bowling second!

MSD needs to stripped off captaincy. He is done! RPS is an IPL team so no big deal. But this unimaginative captaincy is hurting IND. Kohli is a better modern captain with a bowler as a vice-captain will be better for IND.

Is a 50 off 36 balls really better than 4 for 18 off 4 overs? Geez, this really is a batsman's game!
