Kings XI opener Manan Vohra is flummoxed by an Amit Mishra googly.
Daredevils have everything going for them in an emphatic win
Delhi Daredevils could not believe its luck on this day.
On
a two-paced Ferozeshah Kotla pitch, Kings XI Punjab’s batsmen did not
deem it fit to gauge the trajectory of the deliveries or the turn on
offer. If poor judgements resulted in run-outs, thoughtless
stroke-selection ended in stumping and regulation catches.
Together,
they all contributed to the visitors’ most ordinary batting display on
Friday evening. Kings XI could only manage 111 for nine in 20 overs. The
wrecker-in-chief was leg-spinner Amit Mishra, who was playing his 100th
IPL match.
The target was never going to be
challenging even for Delhi whose batting resources appear less than
adequate. The host covered the distance with eight wickets and 6.3 overs
to spare.
After Shreyas Iyer was unfortunate to be
adjudged caught behind, opener Quinton de Kock and Sanju Samson raised
91 runs off just 64 deliveries for the second wicket to pave the way for
an easy win.
Dismal batting
Effectively, the
match was won and lost following Kings XI’s dismal batting performance.
Its saga of horror started with a dropped catch of Manan Vohra leading
to a run out of M. Vijay.
If there was any further proof needed of what fortune had in store for the host this evening, Shaun Marsh provided it.
He stepped out to the first delivery of Mishra to commit hara-kiri.
Soon
after, skipper David Miller and Glenn Maxwell left in the same over of
Mishra — as they did off Dwayne Bravo at Mohali the other night — before
a well-set Vohra, who top-scored with 32, lost his leg-stump to a
googly and became the leg-spinner’s fourth victim.
Mishra’s spell of four for 11 in three overs truly broke the back of Kings XI. Surprisingly, he was not given another over.
The ball continued to roll for the host when Jean-Paul Duminy’s diving throw caught Wriddhiman Saha out of the crease.
As
a result, Kings tumbled from 37 for one from six overs to 65 for six
after 13 overs. Thereafter, Axar Patel, Mohit Sharma and Pardeep Sahu
reached double-figures to take the team’s tally to three digits.
For the record, the host bowled 68 dot balls, conceded just 11 boundaries and two sixes.
Barring
Pawan Negi, the other five bowlers on view contributed double-digit dot
balls with Zaheer heading the list with 17, including a maiden over.
But then, it was one of those rare evenings, when Daredevils got everything right.
