England will face Pakistan on Sunday and a win here will take it to the semifinals of the ICC women’s T20.
England uncorked to fizz (36-run win) against Bangladesh, on seam, went dilute (two-wicket win) against India, on spin, and ran out of gas (one-wicket win), nearly, against the West Indies, on nerve.
If anything, it’s been tested positive — of enterprise and resource; Anya Shrubsole has been stingy — she has five wickets in all, with an economy rate of 3 and 2.75 in the last two. Captain Charlotte Edwards scored 60 in the first game and chose to open with spin against India. Heather Knight, the left-arm spinner, got her the wickets.
With all wins so far, Edwards on Saturday, affirmed that the mood in the camp was upbeat. “It’s been really positive. To win the first three games is something we set out to achieve and we’ve done that. To win here tomorrow would be fantastic. It’ll take us to the semifinal which is very exciting. ”
Pakistan has been good indeed; except for a loss against West Indies that forced it to explore its possibilities. “I don’t think we have to win very big. We have looked at different options, if West Indies win (against India on Sunday), we might have to win with a bigger margin. But if India wins, a mere win for us would suffice,” said Pakistan skipper Sana Mir.
Anam Amin, with her slow left-arm tweakers, sits atop the list of most wickets with seven in three. Edwards put it in perspective. “I think their main strength is their bowling. They’ve got some good spinners. The spinners have dominated this competition so far. I think we bowled and fielded very well in the last two games. That’s been a huge strength.”
Sunday will see two good bowling and fielding units square up then.
Match starts at 7.30 p.m.
