South Africa women produced a fabulous batting performance as they beat
Ireland by 67 runs in a Group-A ICC women’s World T20 match here on
Wednesday.
Unlike in their game against Australia, South Africa made good use of
the start as they posted a huge total of 156. Chasing 157, Ireland
crumbled losing wickets in regular intervals. Except Clare Shillington,
others fell cheaply. Shillington looked assured in the middle as she
punished every bad ball in her 28-ball 34, which included four
boundaries and a six before being run out.
Leg-spinner Sune Luus was the standout performer with the ball for South
Africa as she broke the 44-run stand between Shillington and Isobel
Joyce. She dismissed Joyce and ran through the rest of the Irish
batting. She eventually finished with figures of five for eight.
Earlier, South Africa displayed positive intent right from the first
over, hitting three boundaries. Opener Trisha Chetty hit a run-a-ball 35
and also stitched a 41-run opening partnership with Dane van Niekerk.
Later, Lizelle Lee, Dinesha Devnarain and Chloe Tyron went after the
Irish bowling and accelerated the scoring rate in the final overs with
Tyron and Lee smashing 23 runs in the last over to end the innings on
high.
The scores: South Africa Women 156 for five in 20 overs (Trisha
Chetty 35, Lizelle Lee 30 n.o., Kim Garth two for 26) bt Ireland Women
89 for nine in 20 overs (Clare Shillington 34, Sune Luus five for
eight).
