The West Indies was in cruise mode against Bangladesh on Sunday in the Women’s World T20, after having struggled to beat Pakistan in its opener.
The West Indies came up with a clinical performance beat Bangladesh by 149 runs and consign it to its third straight defeat in a Group-B match of the Womens’ World T20 here on Sunday.
Once again, skipper Stafanie Taylor led from the front and, with able support from fellow opener Hayley Matthews, helped West Indies post a commanding total of 148. Taylor and Matthews set the platform with a 67-run partnership.
While they were stifled by the spinners in their narrow victory over Pakistan, the West Indies batters used their feet to clear the slow outfield against the Bangladesh attack.
Later, power hitter Deandra Dottin upped the rate with a 11-ball 24 that included three boundaries off a single over from leggie Rumana Ahmed.
When Bangladesh chased, opener Sanjida Islam promised some early fireworks with few boundaries. But she was dismissed by a brilliant piece of fielding; Dottin produced a superb one-handed catch on the boundary.
Off-spinners Taylor and Matthews then stifled the chase in the middle overs. A partnership seemed to be developing between Fargana Hoque and Salma Khatun for the third wicket, but that ended at 20 runs when the latter was run-out.
After that, four wickets in the space of 15 runs sealed Bangladesh’s fate by the 14th over.
The scores: West Indies 148 for four in 20 overs (Hayley Matthews 41, Stafanie Taylor 40, Nahida Akter three for 27) bt Bangladesh 99 in 18.3 overs (Nigar Sultan Joty 27, Stafanie Taylor three for 13, Hayley Matthews two for 16, Deandra Dottin two for 17).
